A dental bridge is a fixed prosthesis that replaces a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. The abutment teeth – the teeth adjacent to the gap – are prepared with crowns to support the bridge. When a comfortable fit is achieved, the bridge is cemented to the teeth, so that the false tooth or teeth fill the gap permanently.
A dental bridge is a good solution when teeth have been lost or removed, especially if only one or two teeth are missing. The teeth that are adjacent to the gap need to be healthy and strong. Dental bridges are cheaper and less invasive than dental implants, while offering similarly natural-looking and functional tooth replacement. They are also recommended over implants if the teeth have been gone for a long time, because the remaining bone tissue in the jaw might not be enough to support an implant.
Replacing the missing teeth with a dental bridge not only restores the beautiful smile, but also maintains the functionality of the teeth and jaw. It brings back the ability to speak properly and chew comfortably. The forces during biting are distributed evenly and the existing teeth cannot drift out of position. Any self-consciousness related to not having all the teeth is gone as well.
Traditional bridges, with the pontic “dummy” tooth being supported by the abutment teeth, are the most common. A cantilever bridge is used when teeth exist only on one side of the gap. A Maryland bonded bridges, also called a resin-bonded bridge, uses small wings to bond the false tooth to the two adjacent teeth. Dental bridges can be classified by the material used as well – porcelain fused to metal (PFM), metal, composite resin and others. They can also be permanent or temporary.
