What is upper eyelid surgery?

As the name implies upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid surgery is concerned with the area immediately above the eye. Ageing may cause the eyebrow to descend and/or an excess of skin on the upper eyelid which is sometimes known as a hooded eyelid. Cosmetic blepharoplasty is performed in order to improve the appearance of the face, whereas functional blepharoplasty is performed where the excess or redundant skin actually obscures the vision.

Strictly speaking upper eyelid lift surgery is only concerned with the excess skin on the eyelid but sometimes it is performed in association with an eyebrow lift in order to resolve any issues. Upper eyelid surgery, under local anaesthesia, involves cutting the eyelid in its natural fold and removing the excess skin and tissue. Upper eyelid surgery results are generally very good and any subsequent scarring should be hidden within the eyelid crease. Ptosis, which is a weakening of the eyelid muscle, is treated in a different way.
