What are the different types of gastric bypass surgery?

There are a few types of bypass surgery, however, each type involves going past or around the small intestine.

The gastric bypass types are:

  • restrictive – the food intake is limited due to the reduction of the stomach size
  • malabsorptive – the food absorption is limited
  • combined procedure – it is both restrictive and malabsorptive.

The variations of the surgery are as follows:

  • Roux en-Y gastric bypass (proximal) – the small intestine division is about 45 cm below the stomach and after rearranging, the intestin has an “Y” configuration
  • Roux en-Y gastric bypass (distal) – the small intestine division is about 150 cm below the stomach and after rearranging, the intestin has an “Y” configuration
  • mini gastric bypass.
