What is a gastric bypass?

Gastric bypass is a type of weight loss surgery in which a surgeon makes significant changes in the stomach and small intestine so that the food digestion and absorption are modified.

The stages of the surgery are:

  1. Making a tiny pouch in the stomach (the upper part of the stomach is separated)
  2. Dividing the small intestine and connecting the bottom end of it with the separated upper part of the stomach.

As a result of the procedure, the amount of food (also calories and nutrients) that can be held by the stomach is significantly decreased and the gut hormones are changed (the appetite is suppressed).
