Plastic Surgery Czechia

In recent years, the medical tourism market has grown exponentially. It is now a multi-million pound market with patients from many western countries realising that Eastern European countries, as well as Far Eastern countries, can offer levels of medical care at least  equivalent to that available in their home country,  for a fraction of the cost. Medical treatment abroad is big business. Plastic surgery, also known as cosmetic surgery, is one of the most frequent treatments performed at medical establishments abroad, mainly because such types of surgical procedures are not normally funded by the home country’s national health service unless deemed medically necessary.

What makes a country a good choice for cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks or rhinoplasty to name just a few treatments available? The chosen country for such plastic surgery should have the following features:

  • A cost of living considerably lower than the home country;
  • Well-appointed and well-equipped medical centres (hospitals/clinics etc);
  • Well-trained medical staff who can speak English.

How does plastic surgery in the Czech Republic stack up against these conditions? Firstly the cost of living is significantly lower than in the UK. Specific numbers vary, but it is estimated that Czechia is about 45% cheaper overall when compared to the UK.

There are very strict accreditation requirements for both state-operated and private medical centres in Czechia. This involves regular inspections and national patient surveys. In 1993 Czechia established the Czech Accreditation Institute (CAI) which is involved in ensuring that standards (in every aspect of life) comply with EU requirements and rules. Some medical establishments are also members of other international associations. Many private clinics/hospitals are equipped with some of the latest equipment and are housed in modern purpose-built premises.

Medical staff in Czechia go through a similar training programme to UK doctors – more about this in our section ‘Doctors in Czechia are great specialists’. English is widely spoken in the professional and business world, especially in the big cities like Prague and Brno. In addition, English is now widely taught in schools so those Czechs under about 40 years of age can usually hold a conversation in English.

pragueFor those considering plastic surgery, UK prices are extremely high. Most private medical insurance companies do not include cosmetic surgery in their policies. All this means that when thinking about plastic surgery, Czechia is definitely worth looking at as a possible destination. Czech plastic surgery is up with some of the best in Europe. Indeed, any type of body surgery can be undertaken in the Czech Republic.

What other reasons are there for choosing Czechia as a possible destination for plastic surgery? In addition to the medical facilities on offer for cosmetic surgery, Czechia can also offer many other advantages. It is fairly easily and accessible from most centres in the UK and other European countries. The major Czech cities are served by budget airlines offering relatively cheap air travel. Furthermore, Prague, as wells as other Czech cities, are great places for a break, steeped in history with some wonderful sights and architecture.

A 2018 article in Hospital Times about medical services and innovation in the Czech Republic began with the following: ‘For a country with a population of around ten million, it may be surprising to hear that the Czech Republic is a global leader in specialist, cutting edge healthcare. But despite its size, the Czechs can boast some major achievements in medical innovation.’ Let’s consider some other aspects of having plastic surgery Czechia style!

Is Czechia safe?

According to the Global Peace Index 2019, the Czech Republic is regarded as one of the safest countries in the world (10th in the world and 6th in Europe). This is obviously very important, but is it safe to have plastic surgery in Czechia? When comparing England vs Czechia (or indeed any other country for surgery abroad) one of the biggest differences is that it is more difficult to rectify any problems after the surgery when the initial procedure was undertaken abroad. It is therefore essential that the procedure goes as well as possible first time!

In the Czech Republic, medical tourism is thriving and rates of success are extremely high. Being clear with the surgeon about what is required, will help to prevent disputes later and, of course, this is where having surgeons who are able to converse fluently in English is so essential. All medical centres are checked by the government and all surgeons are well-qualified so from the point of view of medical safety Czechia ticks all the boxes. In addition, in the highly unlikely event that the patient has to return to the medical centre for any reason, returning to Czechia is much cheaper and easier than returning to a country such as Mexico or India. Czech surgery is safe!

Doctors In The Czech Republic Are Great Specialists

It is worth investigating in more detail the doctors/surgeons in the Czech Republic. How does a doctor become qualified? Training to become a doctor is a long process in the Czech Republic. After the initial ‘general’ doctor training of six years at university, the student must then spend three years in practical training. In order to become a ‘legally attested’ specialist surgeon the doctor must then spend a further five years of practice and training. This is very similar, if not slightly longer in some cases, to the training of surgeons in the UK.

In countries where there is a shortage of homegrown surgeons, like the UK, Czech surgeons are in demand. So, it is not unusual to find a Czech surgeon who has spent some years practising in countries like the UK, Scandinavia or Germany. According to the NHS, there were 780 Czech doctors in UK in March 2021.

Czech doctors are well-educated and many have experience of working not only in their home country but overseas as well. The best plastic surgeons in the UK are extremely expensive, however some of the best plastic surgeons can also be found in Czechia. As with any operation it is always wise to investigate or check the authenticity of a surgeon’s qualifications. The Czech Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery was set up fifteen years ago and its members are certified surgeons highly specialised, experienced and educated in aesthetic procedures. It is worth checking if your surgeon is a member of this organisation. Its members include some of the best plastic surgeons in Europe and even some of the best plastic surgeons in the world! Don’t just search for ‘best plastic surgeons near me’, but for some of the best plastic surgeons in Czechia!

Many Interesting Cities in Czechia To Visit

Apart from its fame as an innovative medical centre, the Czech Republic can also offer some exciting centres for general tourism. Possibly the pearl in the crown is the capital city – Prague. This ‘city of a thousand spires’ is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourist attractions in Prague, Czech Republic include the varied architectural styles, Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral and, of course, the famous Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square. Prague is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. However, Czech Republic tourist attractions are not limited to Prague. A second UNESCO Word Heritage Site at Kutna Hora (just 80 kms from Prague) was once the location of one of Europe’s silver mines.

After Prague the biggest cities in Czechia are:

  • Brno – with a mix of architecture from the 13th century to more modern 20th century. Main tourist attractions include: Spilberk Castle, the Old Town Hall and ghoulish crypt in the Capuchin Monastery;
  • Ostrava – not far from the Polish border. An industrial town but with some wonderful countryside around about;
  • Plzen – the birthplace of Pilsner beer. Apart from the brewery museum, Plzen is also an old city with many sightseeing opportunities;
  • Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad in English)- maybe not a city but a well-known spa town with hot mineral springs with proven healing effects;

Of course, many private health facilities are based in the capital, Prague, however these other cities in the Czech Republic can also offer good medical facilities. There are many other Czech Republic cities to visit, but the overall size of the country, three times smaller than the UK, means that getting around is very easy. Czech cities are connected by a very good, comprehensive rail system.

Budget airlines offer a frequent service to Prague from many UK airports at very reasonable prices. As prices in Czechia are so low in comparison with the UK, many patients take a friend, family member or other person along with them – a great holiday for them and company for the person having the plastic surgery. Czech prices for hotels, even in Prague, are very affordable.

With the exception of Karlovy Vary, flights are available directly from the UK or these destinations can be easily reached by rail from Prague which boasts the most frequent flight schedule. Plastic Surgery Czech Republic Reviews

As with any medical procedure it is best to find out as much as possible about the establishment and the surgeon. Reading good, unbiased plastic surgery Czech Republic reviews and blogs are an excellent way of getting first hand knowledge about clinics and surgeons. However it is important to remember that anybody can write anything they like on the Internet, so finding a reputable website host is important.

A website for a specific clinic will often only post good reviews that it receives, however using an agency that represents several clinics may help to get a more rounded picture. The agency may also be able to put you in contact with genuine patients who have already used the services. Check out the websites of ClinicHunter.com or Meditrip for further information.

Alternative Countries To Get Plastic Surgery Abroad

prague

Cosmetic surgery in Czechia is, of course, not the only option for those looking for alternatives to high UK costs. Any medical procedure may mean some pain for a few days after plus an increased chance of blood clots. For these reasons, cosmetic surgery abroad in the European area, with lower-priced flights and shorter journey times, is often the best option. What other countries can provide comparable medical services and prices?

Plastic surgery in Turkey is very popular. In fact, it is one of the top countries for medical tourism. Flights are slightly longer than to the Czech Republic, but when it comes to cosmetic surgery, Turkey prices are comparable to those in Prague or other Czech cities. For those people considering plastic surgery, Turkey is also a good choice.

Another popular contender is Czechia’s northern neighbour – Poland. Similarly to the Czech Republic the cost of living is low and surgeons well-trained. For many people considering plastic surgery, Poland, as a destination, features at the top of their list. Cosmetic surgery in Poland has boomed in recent years and clinics are well-appointed with modern equipment. There are many plastic surgery Poland reviews available on the Internet, recording people’s very positive experiences. So, another excellent option for plastic surgery – Poland.

All inclusive cosmetic surgery packages abroad have also become very popular in recent years. This arrangement means that the surgery is included in the price of a one or two week holiday to a (usually) beach resort. Plastic surgery in Spain is a popular choice for this type of arrangement. However, this does not mean that potential patients should throw caution to the wind, it pays to do all the usual checks on both the cosmetic surgery clinic and the plastic surgeon. Cosmetic surgery abroad is safe, provided the patient ensures that they have all the relevant information about both the clinic and the surgeon.

There is no doubt that for plastic surgery, UK prices are far higher than many other countries. Even for the best cosmetic surgery, UK standards can sometimes be surpassed by the levels of service and experience of surgeons in many other countries. Cosmetic surgery clinics in Czechia provide exceptional offers for cosmetic surgery abroad. However, other countries worthy of consideration for plastic surgery, Turkey, Poland and Spain, are also highly recommended.

Summary

With the exception of that which is considered medically essential, plastic or cosmetic surgery is not usually funded by a a country’s national health service nor is it usually covered by private medical insurance. The only option is to pay for the procedure privately.

In many countries with a lower cost of living, the prices can be considerably lower than in the UK or other western European countries. Czechia is a splendid example of a country where generally prices are much lower than in the UK, but which can boast of excellent surgeons and superb, well-equipped medical facilities. Furthermore there is the added bonus of a possible visit to one of the most attractive capital cities in Europe – Prague. Czechia is one of the best options for plastic surgery abroad!
