Which weight loss surgery is best for me?

A patient always discusses the procedure with a surgeon. The surgeon analyses the patient’s medical history, health condition, and expectations and proposes the best weight loss surgery. In general, patients are suggested to opt for either sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass.

  • Gastric bypass it is a surgery that reduces the stomach size and decreases the amount of fat and calories that can be absorbed. In general, the gastrointestinal tract is rerouted and connected to the sectionalized tiny part of the stomach (the rest of the stomach is bypassed by the digestive system). This surgery is recommended for people with high BMI (40 and over) and suffering from reflux or type 2 diabetes.
  • Gastric sleeve during the surgery, about 80% of the stomach is removed, which results in only tiny portions that the stomach can hold. This procedure is recommended for people having had other abdominal surgeries, those who cannot have a high-risk surgery, and people taking medications regularly (gastric sleeve does not affect the absorption of medications)
  • Duodenal switch it is a connection of gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. the result of this procedure is even more weight loss than after gastric sleeve or bypass and better metabolic effects, on the other hand, it is much more complicated and involves a higher risk of complications. It is dedicated to people with morbid obesity and serious metabolic disorders.

There are some other types of weight loss procedures, e.g. gastric balloon or gastric band, which are less invasive but also trigger less weight loss. Finally, it is always a surgeon who decides about the surgery type and chooses it individually for each patient.
