How Long Does Plastic Surgery Take To Heal?

Recovery from plastic surgery can vary greatly depending on which procedure has been carried out, on what part of the body it has taken place and, of course, the rate at which the body can heal itself. For these reasons everybody’s recovery time is slightly different.

Where they have been required, a nurse will remove sutures, usually within a few days and things should start getting back to normal within a few weeks. For many plastic surgery operations, patients can go back to work after a week or two – with minimally invasive procedures sometimes even quicker. Swelling and bruising, however, may persist for up to six months and total full recovery of the body may take even longer depending on age.

It is important to take note of the post-op care recommended by the medical staff. This will include such things as wound care, optimum sleeping position, the best way of taking a shower, the level of physical activity and when/how sexual activity can be resumed. For some surgery a liquid diet may be necessary for a few days.

It is also important to get rest, get nutrition (healthy diet), stay hydrated, avoid stress, avoid alcohol and have a positive attitude. Wound healing can be aided by using a cold compress as instructed, using arnica cream on the bruising and maintaining hydration levels.

Pain killers may be prescribed for the first few days, but usually this medication is only required short-term. However, for more painful procedures a pain management plan will be devised.

For a smooth recovery, remember to take care of yourself!
