How does breast reduction work?

Breast reduction procedure involves surgical removal of the excess breast tissue, excessive fat and skin through the incisions made in specific areas. Sometimes, a surgeon may decide to use liposuction for fat removal, when there is much fat in the breast area. Each patient is consulted individually, and the technique of the surgery, its scope, incision places and expected results are always discussed before the procedure.

The procedure steps include the following:

  • Step 1 – applying anesthesia – the vast majority of cases involves applying general anesthesia, patients are put asleep and an anaesthesiologist is present throughout the surgery.
  • Step 2 – body marking and making incision – after anesthesia starts to work, a surgeon moves on to making incision lines. The incision types may include: a circular incision (around the areola), a keyhole incision called also tennis racquet pattern (around the areola and vertically down to the crease), and inverted T incision called also anchor-shaped incision (around the areola, vertically down to the crease and along the curves beneath the breasts).
  • Step 3 – making changes – the chosen incisions allow a surgeon to reduce the breasts size by excess skin removal, glandular tissue and fat removal; a surgeon may also do skin lift and nipple repositioning to make breasts look highly aesthetic.
  • Step 4 – closing incisions – after making all the changes, a surgeon closes incisions with sutures. Then, a patient is taken to the post-op room to rest.
