When can I exercise after breast reduction?

After breast reduction, patients should avoid vigorous activity for at least 6 weeks, but easy movement exercises, walking and an active lifestyle is recommended from the very beginning. Each patient recovers in their own pace, but the general timeline of restoring physical activity is as follows:

  • Week 1-2: patients should take short walks as early as they can (even starting on a day after the surgery), they should not exceed 15-20 minutes at the beginning and every day, patients can increase the pace and time of walking.
  • Week 2-4: patients can return to their daily duties, household activities and work. Light exercises on the stomach and legs are available – low intensity needs to be kept. Any tiring activities, like running, are not allowed yet.
  • Week 6-8: patients can implement most of the exercises including jogging or weight lifting (after a surgeon’s permission); the training intensity should be built up gradually.
