What is chemosis after blepharoplasty?
An occasional complication after blepharoplasty is chemosis. It is sometimes known as conjunctival chemosis because it is caused by the the conjunctiva swelling. The conjunctiva is the clear thin membrane covering part of the front surface of the eye as well as the inner surface of the eyelids. It protects and lubricates the eyes by producing mucus and tears. Chemosis most commonly occurs after lower blepharoplasty. It is not dangerous but can be uncomfortable. Often it will resolve itself after 4-6 weeks, although in some instances it may last longer. Chemosis treatment usually consists of lubricating gel to help with the discomfort.
