What is double eyelid surgery?

Our genes predispose us to have either double eyelids where the eyelid has a natural crease in it or monolids where there is no crease in the eyelid. Generally speaking those people of Asian descent tend to have monolids. Creating a crease in the upper eyelid increases the space between the two eyelids and the eyes appear to be much wider. Some Asians, with monolids, would prefer, rather controversially, to appear more ‘westernised’ and elect to have double eyelid surgery. Hence, its alternative name of Asian eyelid surgery. Double eyelid surgery, however, may also be performed for other reasons such as a droopy eyelid (ptosis) or inward growing eyelashes (trichiasis). Double eyelid surgery can be performed with a full or partial incision in the place of the future eyelid crease. The same effect may also be obtained with the much less invasive method of small stitches made along the crease of the eyelid.
