What to expect after blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgery recovery time is fairly quick. Most of the time it is performed as an out-patient procedure and patients can go home the same day. Immediately after the surgery patients may suffer with blurred vision, watering eyes, double vision, light sensitivity, puffy eyelids, numb eyelids, swelling and bruising. All of these should subside fairly quickly although the bruising, scarring and redness may take several weeks to fade. For this reason the permanent eyelid surgery results may not become apparent immediately.

Eyelid surgery recovery time can be minimised by propping the head up with pillows when lying down, cleaning the eyelids with a recommended ointment or eyedrops, using a cold compress such as a cold pack (or packet of frozen peas) wrapped in a tea towel on the eyes, wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes and taking painkillers to relieve any pain. Other more general post-op care instructions apply such as to get rest, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, maintain a healthy diet and generally take care of yourself. The healing process will vary from person to person, however, in general, upper eyelid surgery recovery takes 7-10 days, lower eyelid surgery recovery takes 10-14 days and the double eyelid surgery recovery time is again 10-14 days. After this time patients can return to work, however, swelling and bruising can last up to 3 weeks and the final results of eyelid surgery may not be apparent until 4-12 weeks after the blepharoplasty.

In common with any operation there are eyelid surgery risks. These include general risks like anaesthesia risks, bleeding and slow wound healing, as well as more specific risks such as injury to the eye muscles, a misshapen lower eyelid and visual impairment. These post-surgical complications, however, are very rare and for the vast majority of patients the final result of their blepharoplasty will mean improved facial harmony, a more aesthetic appearance, improved confidence and possibly even an increase in psychological well being. Generally speaking blepharoplasty is a permanent solution, although occasionally droopy eyelids may recur later.
