What happens when gastric band slips?

Gastric band slippage is a common complication of gastric band surgery – it is the situation where a band moves upwards or downwards from its primary position.

The symptoms of band slippage are:

  • the change in food consumption (increased capacity of the stomach, feeling discomfort while or after eating, or lack of appetite)
  • nausea and vomiting
  • pain in the abdominal area
  • acid reflux.

Usually, only a small band adjustment done laparoscopically or just medications help, however sometimes the slippage is so significant that the band removal is necessary.
