Is gastric plication surgery safe?

During the gastric plication procedure, surgeons use laparoscopic minimally invasive technique to provide comfort for the patients and ensure their fast recovery. Instead of a more invasive surgery, only a couple of small incisions are made in the patient’s abdomen. One of its greatest advantages is the fact that gastric plication can be reversed as no permanent changes to the digestive system are required and the sutures used to reduce the size of the stomach can be removed. Also, the risk of complications is lower than in the case of other types of weight-loss surgeries such as gastric sleeve, where the large part of the stomach is removed, or gastric bypass where rearranging of the digestive system is necessary. In the article published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s website titled “Twelve-year experience of laparoscopic gastric plication in morbid obesity: development of the technique and patient outcomes”, the authors present statistics regarding 800 patients who had gastric plication surgery and post-op complications were reported only in 1% of the cases.
