Is gastric sleeve surgery painful?

Yes, patients experience some pain after any weight loss surgery, including the gastric sleeve. On a surgery day, the pain is rather moderate – patients are provided with intravenous medications if necessary. A day after the surgery, the anesthesia has worn off completely, so the pain may get more intense (however, with laparoscopic procedures, the pain is bearable) – but nurses will give painkillers on patients’ request. The pain in days 2-14 still is experienced, but the main reason for it is activity (patients walk, turn, change positions), day by day, the pain should alleviate. In weeks 2 and 3, pain appears when patients make fast movements, bursts, and turns only. If the pain still appears after 2 months, patients should contact the doctor.
