What foods to avoid after gastric sleeve?

Just after the surgery, patients must follow a strict diet for a few weeks, however, the eating habits must change for a lifetime and there are some food types that should be avoided even after reaching the final effects.

They include:

  • food containing empty calories (e.g. sweets, popcorn, chips, pastries)
  • alcohol
  • very dry food (e.g. granola)
  • a starchy food (especially bread or rice)
  • fibrous fresh vegetables and fruit
  • fatty food (e.g. bacon, butter, sausages, hard cheese)
  • drinks rich in sugar and/or caffeine
  • tough meat.

Patients need to remember that gastric sleeve allows them to lead a normal healthy life without any significant food eliminations – what is important after reaching the desired weight loss is making healthy food choices and following a balanced diet. Patients may eat almost everything but in moderate quantities.
