Liposuction Spain

Liposuction, or ‘lipo’ as it is often called, removes fat which is not possible to get rid of through exercise or diet. The procedure usually takes place on the arms, back, hips, buttocks, thighs or belly as well as under the chin or face. Liposuction is classed as cosmetic surgery so is usually not available on the NHS or other national health service. In 2020 liposuction was the second most performed cosmetic surgery after breast augmentation according to the 2021 report from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

The cost of liposuction varies greatly depending on where on the body the procedure is being performed and the extent of the liposuction. However, plastic surgery abroad often represents a substantial saving on private medical costs in the UK, North America and much of western Europe. Why is it possible to obtain cheap plastic surgery abroad?

The main reason that private medical surgery abroad is cheaper than, for example, in the UK, is purely down to the difference in the cost of living between countries. Obviously, in countries where salaries, utility bills such as electricity and water and general building maintenance charges are significantly lower, this is reflected in the charges for a medical procedure and this is no different for liposuction.

Many potential UK patients now actively search for good prices for liposuction; Europe often being the main contender because of its proximity. Medical establishments offering treatment rated as some of the top liposuction in Europe include Poland, Czechia, Belgium, Hungary and Spain.

This article explores some of the reasons for considering plastic surgery in Spain. Of course, one of the most attractive advantages is that it is possible to combine plastic surgery, holiday, Spain and sunshine into one very appealing package. When it comes to plastic surgery, Spain is definitely a top contender.

If you are considering some kind of liposuction, Spain may be a good choice for you. It can easily be combined with a holiday, for just you or for the whole family. So let’s have a look at other reasons to go to Spain, liposuction costs and standards of medical care.

Liposuction Cost Spain

How much is liposuction? This is a difficult question to answer as the liposuction cost varies depending on how many parts of the body require the treatment and the type of procedure. However, in the UK, prices range from about £2,500 to £10,000, with liposuction on just one area costing around £4,000. When it comes to plastic surgery abroad, prices tend to be much lower in many other countries.

When thinking about liposuction cost, Europe is a good place to start. It may not always be the cheapest option in terms of procedure costs, but it does mean relatively cheap and frequent flights and, perhaps more importantly, short flights. Having to sit in the same position for any hours on a long haul flight is not a good idea after a medical procedure. Apart from the obvious discomfort, any medical procedure increases the chances of blood clots so it may be better to consider locations with shorter flight times. Depending on the departure point in the UK and the destination in Spain, flight times vary between 2-3 hours.

How much does liposuction cost in Spain? The average cost of plastic surgery in Spain is around 35% cheaper than in the UK. There may be cheaper prices in other European countries, however the beauty of Spain is that it is so easy to combine any medical treatments with a holiday. In fact, the savings made on the UK price will fund a super holiday for possibly the whole family!

Let’s consider some of the ‘plastic surgery in Spain’ statistics:

  • Spain ranked 15th in the world in 2020 when it came to the number of plastic surgeons – approx 900 surgeons (Statista);
  • Spain ranks 11th in the world for the number of plastic surgery procedures performed (ISAPS 2021 report);
  • Prior to COVID the plastic surgery market in Spain was growing by 20% a year.

As with all countries, some of the best clinics and surgeons are based in the capital of Madrid, however many cosmetic clinics are located in the main tourist areas along the Spanish coast. The Costa del Sol is particularly popular as it has been known as the playground of the rich and famous for many years. Bear in mind that the liposuction Spain prices will vary somewhat around the country with a possible slightly higher cost of plastic surgery in Madrid, Spain.

Is Spain Cheap?

spainIs it cheap in Spain? According to official statistics Spain is 18.2% cheaper than the UK. This figure, of course, takes into account everything required to actually live in the country i.e. cost of housing, food, transport etc. Although many potential plastic surgery patients will not be directly interested in housing and transport costs, these figures do serve to highlight why liposuction is cheaper in Spain. If the surgeon is paying less for his home, for his car, for his family in general and the medical centre is paying less for electricity, water and staff wages, then obviously this will be reflected in the cost of the surgery.

How cheap is Spain? It must be said that Spain is not as cheap as some countries in Eastern Europe or the Balkans, but it does rank as one of the cheapest Western European countries, with the addition, of course, of some wonderful beaches and warm climate.

Reasons to do Liposuction in Spain

‘Lipo’ is normally done for cosmetic purposes so the medical benefits of liposuction are minimal. However, for some people the psychological benefits may be enormous and just feeling better about oneself can be a tremendous boost. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that, although it has been around for about 40 years, liposuction, like any medical intervention, does carry minimal risks to health. Patients who may be more at risk include those suffering with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, deep vein thrombosis or seizures. Being overweight or having chronic health problems or a weak immune system may also lead to complications.

For some categories of patients, however, there are some health benefits of liposuction. This procedure can treat such medical conditions as benign fatty tumours, abnormal enlargement of male breasts, lipodystrophy (a condition which causes problems with how fat is metabolised) and excessive underarm sweating. Liposuction to treat these conditions may sometimes be available on the NHS. Generally, though, the benefits of liposuction surgery are limited to psychological benefits.

Different Types of Liposuction in Spain

Once the decision has been made to have liposuction in Spain, one of the next questions will be – what is the best liposuction for me? Medical centres in Spain offer different types of liposuction. Essentially, liposuction entails inserting a cannula (thin tube) into the skin and sucking out the excess fatty cells. It is not considered to be a way of losing weight but as of way of removing stubborn fat, which cannot be shifted by exercise and diet. Let’s consider some of the different types of liposuction techniques :

  • Tumescent Liposuction – this is the most common technique now used. A sterile solution is injected into the area where the fat is being removed. This sterile solution is saline (salt water), lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) and epinephrine (adrenaline used to treat severe allergies). This solution allows the fat to be suctioned out with minimal blood loss and pain.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) – this technique liquifies the fat cells with the use of sound wave energy. The liquified fat can then be suctioned out.
  • Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) – this techniques is similar to UAL, except that it uses the power of lasers to liquify the fat.
  • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) – this technique uses a vibrating cannula which breaks down the fat more easily.

Please see our general article on liposuction with more information on each of these techniques, in order to decide which would be the best one for you.

The four types of liposuction above are the usual methods used by surgeons in all countries, including Spain, in order to carry out a liposuction procedure. Often, a clinic will only use one or two of these methods.

There is also new types of liposuction – including non-invasive 3D liposuction. The skin is not cut in any way with this method – the fat cells are simply destroyed rather than being sucked out. A gel is applied to the area and diode lasers are used to heat the area, so that a process called ‘cavitation’ completely destroys the cells. Alternatively, ‘crylipolysis’ is sometimes utilised, where extreme cold is used to destroy the cells.

All of these different types of liposuction procedures have their advantages and disadvantages, so it is always wise to talk to the surgeon to explain exactly what is required prior to the procedure.

Experienced Surgeons

When considering liposuction in any country, including Spain, it is extremely important to check the credentials and qualifications of the surgeon. In line with most EU countries specialist surgeons in Spain are well- educated. They must train for a minimum of six years before they are qualified as a general doctor and then go on to several more years training and practice as a plastic surgeon.

Spain has very strict rules and regulations when it comes to cosmetic surgery and all doctors are closely regulated according to Spanish law. It is always worth, however, double checking the details of the surgeon who will be performing the surgery. Do they belong to a recognised organisation? The Spanish national society for plastic surgeons is Secpre and the other international organisation that many plastic surgeons belong to is ISAPS (International Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons). One further thing to check is the surgeons experience – how many liposuction operations has he/she performed. In order to perform plastic surgery best, doctors should have had several years experience and be carrying out operations regularly. Unless the patient has a very good command of the Spanish language, fluent English is also an essential.

The best plastic surgeons are those with plenty of experience. One of the advantages of booking through an agency, such as Medic Travel or ClinicHunter is that they hold up-to-date information on all the surgeons they deal with and can provide history, experience and qualifications for all of them. They may even be able, sometimes, to put you in touch with patients who have already been treated by a particular surgeon.

If you are looking for the best plastic surgery doctors then Spain is a good country to consider. Some of the most famous plastic surgery doctors work here.

High-quality Medical Care and Treatment Facilities

Interestingly, Spain repeatedly scores better in overall world medical care surveys than the UK. In the latest (2021) CEOWorld Magazine’s Health Care Index Spain came in at 8th position, while the UK was at 10th position. The WHO no longer issues such statistics but its last index put Spain in 7th place with the UK in 11th place. These are, of course, based on the national health service of the country but it must be fair to say that these sort of standards must be reflected in the private health care sector.

Medical care in Spain is therefore of the highest quality. In the above index the only European countries above Spain were Denmark, Austria and France and in these three countries, private medical treatment is generally no cheaper than in the UK. It therefore makes sense that for overseas medical care Spain is a winner.

What about medical care in Spain for foreigners? For medical tourists, the standard of the private medical facilities is very high. Clinics and hospitals are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art machines and devices and are often located in new, modern buildings.

And medical care in Spain post-Brexit? When it comes to medical tourism nothing much has changed when it comes to visiting Spain. Brits are allowed to enter Spain visa-free for up to 90 days in any one 180 day period. Although Brits are still heading to Spain for holidays, this has, of course, been complicated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, so visitors to Spain have been much reduced over the last few years. However, with the UK normally sending the second highest number of tourists to the Spanish Costas (the highest being France), Spain is very keen to maintain the flow of traffic between the two countries. Britain leaving the EU did mean that facilities in the Spanish national health service are only available in an emergency and with the new GHIC medical card, however this does not affect medical tourism which takes place in the private sector.

Cosmetic Surgery Holidays

Cosmetic surgery holidays are a great way of combining some ‘down time’ with some plastic surgery. It should be remembered that there may be some pain immediately after the liposuction, so it is best to plan where the procedure will take place in the holiday schedule. Some people prefer to have it at the start of the holiday so they can recuperate in sunnier climes while others prefer to have it at the end so they can enjoy the holiday and then recuperate at home. Overseas cosmetic surgery holidays are not, of course, limited to places in Europe, but holidays further afield with unfamiliar food and long flight times may not always be the best choice when some type of medical procedure is involved. There are now many tour operators offering plastic surgery holidays, but as always it is important to check out or ask for more information on the clinics and surgeons. Without a doubt overseas plastic surgery holidays are a good idea.

What about arranging liposuction when you are there? Many medical centres in resort will tout for business among holidaymakers. Making an instant decision to have plastic surgery after a few drinks in a resort may not be the best choice. There will be little time to check out the authenticity of the medical centre and/or surgeon and in some cases could be dangerous. It is best either to book plastic surgery holidays packages as a complete deal (with the usual checks) or book a package holiday and separately a medical package through a reputable agent.

Most Popular Destinations for Liposuction Spain

Which are the best cities in Spain for liposuction? Spain is no different from other countries inasmuch as some of the best medical centres and surgeons are in some of the biggest cities in Spain. These include places like the capital – Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga to name but a few. Cities in Spain have a rich history with many interesting sights. Some of the most beautiful cities in Spain include Toledo (about 45 miles from Madrid), Cordoba, Alicante and Seville. The list of cities in Spain to visit is endless.

However, because of its popularity as a beach destination with northern Europeans, and especially the Brits, there are some excellent clinics along the Costas e.g. there are numerous medical resorts for plastic surgery in Malaga, Spain. Other tourist destinations with good plastic surgery facilities include Alicante, Benidorm and Valencia. It’s important to also remember the Spanish islands like Majorca (Balearic Islands) and Tenerife (Canary Islands). These islands, too, can also offer great medical facilities and wonderful beaches and sun!

Liposuction in Spain Reviews

A quick search on the Internet will reveal numerous private clinics in Spain offering liposuction and listing all the positive liposuction reviews they have received. This is useful information, but it is also worth searching for independent reviews on non-associated websites, although it must be said that these review websites are now big business so cannot be classed as totally unbiased. However, double checking information between review websites should give a clear picture. Personal blogs are also sometimes a good place to search for first hand information.

Liposuction before and after pictures may also help you make your choice. Google images may be useful here, but also most reputable agents will be able to send you lipo before and after photos taken by the surgeons they represent. It is important to bear in mind that everyone’s body is slightly different, however these photos can give prospective patients a very good idea of what may be achievable. Those pictures showing stomach liposuction before and after are often the most popular.

Alternative Countries for Liposuction Abroad

Are there any alternatives to liposuction in Spain? Yes, there are many countries that can offer liposuction considerably cheaper than in the UK. Googling ‘liposuction near me’ will only produce a list of clinics in the UK (if that is your home country), however inputting ‘liposuction abroad’ will bring up a huge list of clinics and agents offering liposuction in almost every corner of the world.

Cheap liposuction abroad should not mean lower hygiene standards, inexperienced surgeons and only basic facilities. Good medical centres in well-chosen destinations, like Spain, ensure that the medical procedure will be performed to the highest standard by experienced surgeons in well-maintained clinics with all the latest equipment.

Let’s consider some other prices of liposuction abroad – comparison:

Country

Average Cost in £s

Czech Republic

1 200

Hungary

1 000

Poland

1 300

Spain

2 500

Thailand

2 300

Turkey

2 200

It should be remembered that ‘liposuction’ consists of a variety of different procedures on a few different parts of the body. These prices are just ‘average’ prices designed to show the savings that can be made. The average UK price would be around £6,000.

Liposuction in Poland is very popular. Although it cannot compete with the sunny Costas of Spain, its prices are very good value. English is widely spoken, both among medical staff and the population at large. All medical establishments, both state and private, are monitored strictly, and many are new builds with state-of-the-art equipment. The flight duration from the UK to Poland is around the same length of time as UK to Spain. If you are considering liposuction, Poland is also a winner.

Liposuction in Thailand has also grown in popularity over the last few years. Although its level of service and hygiene are extremely good and its doctors well-trained, it is, of course, a long way from Europe. This means that flight costs will be higher and the length of flight longer. However, like Spain, it does offer great possibilities for a holiday combined with treatment. Lots of sun and idyllic beaches make Thailand a dream holiday for many people. Why not combine it with liposuction Thailand style!

Turkey is one of the major destinations for any type of cosmetic surgery and liposuction in Turkey is no exception. Turkey also has the added attraction of its Aegean Sea and Mediterranean resorts as well as the city of Istanbul – an interesting combination of both western and eastern cultures. In addition to liposuction, Turkey is also a major destination for procedures like face lifts, butt lifts, breast enhancement/reduction as well as many others. For any type of liposuction, Turkey is a good destination to consider.

Summary

Liposuction is a fairly common type of cosmetic surgery, with prices varying greatly depending on the type of procedure used and the area of the body to be treated. Despite this huge difference in prices, large amounts of money can be saved by having the treatment at a medical centre overseas. Spain represents an excellent choice, particularly, but not only, for those people who would like to combine a holiday with their treatment. English is widely spoken and all medical establishments are well-appointed with well-trained surgeons. In general, Spain’s national health service is held in very high regard. There is no doubt that for anybody considering liposuction, Spain would be an excellent choice. More information about medical establishments and surgeons can be obtained from our consultants.
