What Happens to Plastic Surgery When You Get Old?

The common myth that plastic surgery will mean that, further down the line, the patient will not ‘age’ naturally, is totally untrue. Plastic surgery still allows the patient to age naturally, it is just that the clock has been turned back. As a very simple example, if one identical twin had plastic surgery which made her look ten years younger, this will mean that even into old age she will always look ten years younger than her identical twin. It is a lifelong change which is not affected in the normal way by the ageing process.

As lifespan increases, more and more older patients are looking for plastic surgery, particularly to tackle such problems as ageing skin and sagging skin. There is some evidence that skin regeneration abilities are not affected by age, however general wound healing may take longer. Sagging skin treatment more often focuses on non-surgical age rejuvenation. In other procedures muscle mass loss may also pose a risk factor. However, the ageing process varies greatly from person to person and is based on a variety of factors including genes and lifestyle. Each case, therefore, will be assessed by a surgeon individually.
