Who Needs Plastic Surgery?

Whether plastic reconstructive surgery or plastic cosmetic surgery, the common thread is the desire to improve the overall look of the body. However, it must be said, that in some cases plastic reconstructive surgery is performed due to health issues e.g. a crooked nose may be obstructing the airways and ultimately could be dangerous.

In cases where plastic reconstruction surgery is required, the patient’s doctor will often recommend the relevant procedure and refer the person to the appropriate plastic surgeon. This reconstructive surgery may include such procedures as craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, the treatment of burns (skin grafting) and congenital abnormalities.

For cosmetic surgery, the patients simply have a desire to improve their image. For some people this may mean an hourglass body shape, a flat stomach, firm buttocks, a defined waist, excess skin removal (maybe after a big weight loss) or simply the desire to have the perfect body shape. Cosmetic surgery can improve appearance and reverse the signs of ageing. Some of the most common procedures are abdominoplasty, mammoplasty, rhinoplasty and liposuction.

The advantages of cosmetic surgery is that the results are fast and usually permanent. This means that it may almost instantly lead to improved confidence and psychological well-being. This is particularly true when it comes to facial features and what are regarded as perfect facial proportions.

Before deciding on plastic surgery and that ideal body shape it is worth considering the post-surgical complications. These may include such things as haematomas (bleeding), blood clots, inflammation, infection, scarring and skin numbness. Minimally invasive surgery may lessen some of these surgery risks, such as visible scars. Plastic surgery risks are slightly raised when it comes to augmentation procedures such as on the breast and buttocks. With the use of silicone implants side effects may include implant position changes and ruptures.

A surgeon will only perform cosmetic surgery on a patient who is in good physical condition. This includes being in good health, having a stable weight and not smoking. Any candidate for surgery should be thoroughly evaluated to minimise the risks. The surgeon will also help the candidate in setting realistic expectations.
