What is tummy tuck recovery?
In order to ensure a successful end result it is important to follow the post-operative recovery instructions and tummy tuck recovery tips which will be given to you by the hospital/clinic. An abdominoplasty is major surgery and immediately after the procedure you may have tummy tuck drains inserted and may have to wear an abdominal binder.
Providing the surgery has gone as planned, patients are allowed home the same day or the next day after an overnight stay. Recovery time varies greatly depending on the specific type of operations and the age and health of the patient as well as the body’s own timeline for repairing itself. Getting back to normal will take a little time with most surgeons recommending going back to work only after 4-6 weeks ( some procedure e.g. a mini tummy tuck will require a slightly shorter time). In addition to the abdominal binder there are a range of different compression garments and tummy tuck clothing – tummy tuck pants, tummy-tuck jeans – which, when worn, will help to minimise the recovery time.
Exercise is also important and the consultant will advise when it is possible to exercise after a tummy tuck. Initially, after the first few weeks this will be just gentle exercise like a short walk, but later patients can do more energetic exercise after a tummy tuck. Tummy tuck aftercare also includes maintaining a post-operative diet – essentially a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. It is important to get nutrition. There is no need to follow a liquid diet, but it is better to start with a soft diet immediately after the surgery and progress to a more normal diet. It is important not to have a weight gain after a tummy tuck as this will adversely affect the result.
The hospital/clinic will provide post-op instructions about wound care after a tummy tuck. It is important to attend the follow-up appointment so a check can be made on the recovery progress. The medical staff will also give advice on a good sleeping position, taking a shower, sun bathing and when strenuous activities and sexual activity can resume. Further recommendations will be made on pain management and what medication is best suited for this. It is important to take care of yourself.
