What BMI qualifies for weight loss surgery?
To be qualified for weight loss surgery, patients should have a BMI of 40 or higher. Patients with BMI 35-40 can get the surgery only when they suffer from any accompanying diseases related to obesity (e.g. type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, reflux). Patients with BMI over 50 may get disqualified for the surgery – however it depends on their health condition and whether they would bear the general anesthesia.
