How Does Vaginoplasty Work?

Vagina tightening performed for cosmetic purposes is done under anaesthesia, either general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia, although it is often carried out as outpatient surgery. There are various types of vaginoplasty technique or genitoplasty procedures. The basic vaginoplasty procedure involves the excess skin removal and a tightening of the muscles. Sometimes the Vecchietti procedure, which is keyhole surgery, may be required to increase the dilation of the tightened vagina.

Rather than surgery, this can sometimes be partly achieved by laser vaginoplasty. This involves a series (two or more) laser treatments about 4-6 week apart. This laser vaginal rejuvenation thickens the lining of the vagina and increases lubrication. Another technique is the g-spot amplification procedure which temporarily increases the size and sensitivity of the g-spot with the use of filler. It is designed to improve the female orgasm. The aim of these types of procedures is not only to improve sexual intercourse but also to facilitate a designer vagina. These ‘perfect’ vaginas can be seen in before and after vaginoplasty pictures available on the internet.

When it comes to sex reassignment surgery more drastic surgical procedures are required. A penile inversion vaginoplasty involves cutting and forming a ‘tunnel’ between the rectum and the urethra and prostate. This ‘tunnel’, lined with skin from the scrotum and/or penis, becomes the new vagina. The most frequently used technique to do this is the Abbe McIndoe vaginoplasty. A bowel vaginoplasty uses a segment of the large or small bowel to line the new vagina where the skin available from the scrotum or penis is insufficient. The laparoscopic Vecchietti procedure is then sometimes required in order to dilate the vagina.

When it comes to hymen repair surgery, on 01 July 2022 the UK government made it illegal for anybody in the UK to offer to perform or help somebody to obtain a hymenoplasty. It is also illegal for UK nationals to obtain this surgery outside the UK.
