What is Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty surgery is a procedure that addresses either the problem of a loose vagina, through childbirth or ageing, or may become part of the process of gender alignment (i.e. male to female). Vaginoplasty is only one of the aesthetic genital surgery procedures which may enhance the appearance of the genital area, which all come under the umbrella of genitoplasty.

Sometimes there are pressing medical reasons for vagina plastic surgery, but often a vaginoplasty surgeon will perform the procedure for cosmetic reasons. A ‘loose’ vagina may lead to issues with self-confidence as well as a loss of sensitivity. Very basically, vagina plastic surgery cuts the tissues and skin, tightens them and stitches them back together again. Although, this vaginal rejuvenation will certainly improve the appearance of the genital area, there is no absolute guarantee that sexual sensitivity will improve. In some cases tightening vagina surgery may even lead to more pain during sexual intercourse.

This plastic surgery is also frequently used by those patients who are transiting from male to female. It is often used in the gender reassignment process, in order to create female genitalia. This type of plastic surgery is typically known as reconstructive surgery.  Vaginoplasty may be carried out by a gynaecologist or a plastic surgeon.
