How does a breast lift work?

What does a breast lift involve? Well, the stages of a mastopexy procedure are the same as in other plastic surgeries. Yet, what is characteristic of breast lift procedures, there are several breast lift procedures techniques available. The technique is chosen by a plastic surgeon individually depending on the breast shape and size, the position of areolas and their size, the scale of breast sagging, and skin elasticity.

The steps of breast lift procedure include:

• Anesthesia: there is always general anesthesia used in breast lift. A patient is put asleep and throughout the surgery, an anaesthesiologist must be present in the operating room.
• Incision: there are 3 main types of the incision lines. An incision pattern (defined by specific types of mastopexy) is agreed before the surgery and is chosen based on breast anatomy and expected changes. The incisions can be made:
  -around the areola (a so-called donut breast lift)
  -around the areola and go vertically down to the crease of the breast (a so-called lollipop breast lift)
  -around the areola, go vertically down to the crease of the breast and then go horizontally along the crease (a so-called anchor breast lift).
• Making changes: after making the incisions, a surgeon moves on to reshaping the breasts. The changes may include:
  -skin lift and breast reshaping of the underlying tissue – it improves the breasts firmness and their contour;
  -repositioning nipples and areolas, so that they look natural and youthful;
  -the excess skin removal, which makes the remaining breast skin more elastic.
• Closing incisions: when all the changes are made, a surgeon closes the incisions with the sutures. They are layered deeply within the tissue of the breasts. There may also be surgical tape and/or skin adhesives used to support the sutures.

The stages above are followed in a common full mastopexy (bilateral mastopexy). Yet, the surgery course may differ when some other procedures are added. The common combinations include e.g. breast lift with implants, breast reduction and uplift, breast lift and areola reduction, breast lift with fat transfer, tummy tuck and breast lift, or mommy makeover.
